The Public2Private work experience initiative arose out of a discussion between Carolyn Giles of Hardwick HR and Nicki Parker-Jones of Aspire, in response to the ever-increasing redundancies in Plymouth area’s public sector.
What is the purpose of the project? The Public2Private project was started up, with the aim to match people looking for new jobs outside the public sector with work placements that private sector companies can offer in order to meet their own commercial needs.
How does it work? The scheme aims to provide short term work placements of around 4-8weeks. These placements are unpaid and carry no employment rights, so companies are free from expectations. The placements are designed to give people an insight into the running of a private company, boost confidence and add excellent experience to their CV. This confidence is then design to assist interview skills and the ability to secure a job within the private sector.
Devon Chamber of Commerce supports this project and holds the database of candidates and companies to match up suitable opportunities. Job Centre Plus is also on board, and will be offering advice to participating people in terms of their claim, number of hours they can work and any other information relating to their benefits.

What’s the benefit for a private sector company? As a company offering placements you would be able to utilise skills to complete potential projects such as; conducting an overview of management accounts, updating the customer database, conducting a survey or developing a new piece of software. The target given to a work placement must be SMART and offer a benefit to the person involved.
